Chapter Twenty-Two

Bones

I followed VJ when he stormed out of the clubhouse. I followed him, calling his name as he rode away on his motorcycle. I jumped on mine and tried to keep up with him. The trouble with VJ is, once he has murder in mind, there is no stopping him. However, VJ is my best friend, and for all his faults, what happened today crushed him.

I’ve known VJ since we were small boys, and I have never known him to be affected by anything the way he was upon seeing Chloe in that video. I thought VJ was about to flip out on Jett for daring to tell him not to avenge Chloe. Only an idiot would believe for a second that would work where VJ is concerned.

I keep my distance as we ride past the lake and down Soresby Lane. At this moment in time, I have no idea where he’s going. All I know is that I need to make sure VJ doesn’t do something stupid and get himself arrested again.

I’ve spent my life trying to keep VJ out of trouble. I’ve probably succeeded once in my life, and that was at school. VJ doesn’t care who knows what he’s done and to whom. He used to relish telling others that he was to blame for whatever had gone down. Family aside, I don’t know anyone who isn’t scared of VJ. I’m his best friend, and I’d be a liar if I said he didn’t terrify me at times.

Though every man out there doing what we do as a club would love to be feared the way VJ is, I’m not sure it’s as much fun as he makes out. He’s always on high alert, though he’s always spoiling for a fight. Prison changed VJ, and he isn’t the same man he was before he went inside. He’s calmer because of Chloe, yet he’s a pressure cooker waiting to explode.

I don’t have a clue what happened to him in that place, but I know it can’t have been good. There’s no point asking VJ what happened because he’d never tell me. The man will keep it all to himself, never telling anyone anything, but taking his anger out on the first guy he sees.

“Shit.” I curse to myself. VJ spotted the two hillbillies drinking beer, while they sit on the hood of their parked truck. This is not going to be good.

VJ is already off his motorcycle and beating the hell out of both men before I’ve even parked. I rush toward VJ, but I can’t get close. The biggest guy pulls a shotgun, VJ doesn’t even notice because he’s busy pounding the other guys face in.

“VJ, look out!” I rush close, but fat guy has the shotgun pressed against VJ’s chest.

VJ looks down at the gun, then back at fat guy with an evil smirk on his face. “You have two seconds to pull the trigger. Are you brave enough?”

“Don’t do this!” I yell. I get close enough that I could reach out and grab the guys arm, but I won’t.
